First of all, it was dinky. Much smaller than I remember in years past. Some obvious makes weren’t even there, like Cadillac or genesis. Still, I found enough to entertain myself for the $7 price

Second, I checked out the TourX. Huzer talked about how he was kind of let down by the interior materials, and I have to say I see what he meant. The soft padded materials were fine, but a little too rubbery, too much like in a Malibu. I think Buick materials should be on a higher level, maybe not Caddy level, but closer. The Avenue trim cars did have better material.

The Palisade is cool, and huge. It looks great. The Navigator makes the Palisade look like a midsize SUV though. It needs a hangar instead of a garage.

Sometimes I should go to one of these smaller shows just because I will have time and space to actually sit in the cars.

Planning to go to the NYIAS this year.

I don’t think I’ll ever get used to a gear selector knob. I know it’s all done electrically, and there’s no need for a stalk or a shifter. Still, I like to have somewhere to rest my hand.

I’m guessing the shift knobs were removed so people wouldn’t steal them?

Yes - most of the cars at auto shows are provided by dealers. I worked at one that provided cars years ago - we would remove anything that could easily come off, and put locking gas caps on every car. People would still damage them, because some people suck.

Hmmm, I wasn’t even aware that the Palisade was a thing, but it looks nice. Will have to check it out next month at the Chicago show.

The one I’m looking forward to from Lincoln is the Aviator - it might be hard to resist, if I really need an SUV next time around , and the interior is as nice as the Navigator.

Our local auto show is put on by dealers and not by manufacturers like the big shows so you get weird things like Cor vettes and Mustangs being locked up so you can’t get in them but $150k Porsches are wide open to try out.

Lincoln had the push button trans a couple years ago, I don’t know if they are still doing it. It was great. People hate change and complained about it. It just freed up so much interior space.

No making fun of the TourX! New rules, thus sayeth me, a Supreme Being.

Somebody around here (other than me) could cite chapter and verse on the history of push button transmissions. They’re nothing new. I’ m guessing the the only reason we didn’t go to them earlier was that they just weren’t reliable at the time.

Oh I still like it. Fun fact I learned from the Buick guy:  the wheel arch cladding can be removed by detaching some clips, which I would do.

I thought at least at the first tier shows the cars were factory demos.

To your OP , I realized the other day that I was finally, truly getting old because I looked at a Buick and said, “Hmm, that’s a nice looking  car.”

That is the nice part. I actually had fun at the minincar show at the state fair.

I wanted to sit in some genesis cars though. A little disappointed.

Even on the bumpers? I know the quarters/doors but the front bumper and skirts is the key.

Granted it was a long time ago, but the dealer I worked at was providing cars to the Chicago Auto Show. I don’t think that’s changed. Maybe NY, LA and Detroit are different.

I can’t confirm or refute. I’m guessing a combo though at those shows.

I don’t know about those. I was just looking at the wheel arches.

The aviator was nice. And it looks  like it might fit in one zip code.

Part of the joy of sitting in a new car is the feel of the shifter. And it bugs the crap out of me that most manufacturers have to remove the shift knobs because idiots stea l them.

I feel like I’m sitting in a junk yard car when I get in and there’s no damn shifter.

For the love of Oppo, break out a drill, drill a small diameter hole in the bottom of the shift knob, and bolt it down to the shifter.

Nice pics by the way. That Lincoln is yuge.

Yeah, but they seem out of place in big manly pick-em-up trucks, no matter how beefy you make them look.

Thanks! And yes it is.  No way that fits in the average garage

Totally agree. The knob is where your hand does instinctively.

Column shifter or GTFAC.

Exactly. My Odyssey has a column shifter, and 90-percent of the time behind the wheel is spent with my right hand resting on the shift knob.

I completely forgot about this. I went the last two years while waiting to see the JL.

Was there a Gladiator on display?

There was not that I remember, although I didn’t look for it.

We saw an ad for the show  on TV and said what the heck. My daughter got in free. Honestly, a city with such a rich motoring history deserves a better show.

I agree, but I suppose it’s been 50 years since there’s been a Hoosier motor company. I’d guess  Studebaker was the last to fall.

History doesn’t favor the losers.

Maybe. But we still have racing. Someone could have brought a race car or something.
